Day 2: Modena, Mille et Miglia, and a Drive Through the Countryside
Bill and I got up early and went into downtown Modena to witness the Mille et Miglia, an Italian vintage car rally with a long rich history. Car after car came by - vintage Ferrarries, Bugotis, Mercedes, and many others came speeding through the streets of Modena. In the afternoon, Bill, Anna, Mary and I took a drive through the countryside including a visit to Castelvetro di Modena and the Riserva Naturale Salse di Nirano. The Salse are emissions of cold muddy waters mixed with methane along fractures and faults. The name "salsa" results from the salt content of these emissions. Their origin is related to the sea that occupied the present Po Plain about one million years ago.
